How to Start a Blog in 5 Easy Steps:

What is a blog?

A blog is a personal website that the owner keeps updated with regular high-quality content. Most of the time, the content is written in an informal or conversational style and is meant to educate or entertain the reader.

Why you should start a blog?

Starting a blog TODAY could be the best decision you’ll ever make.

Starting your own personal blog is by far the easiest way to start making money online and create a business that can bring you the freedom that you’re looking for.

What type of blog should you start?
There are many ways to go about creating a blog, but I recommend that you start a Personal Brand blog.

With a Personal Brand blog, you become the brand. This blog will be your home-base on the internet. And where you will post helpful information that people are searching for.

Take a look at this blog for example. This is my own personal blog. Here I post about the many ways to make money online. But I focus on teaching people how to start a blog that can replace their full-time job.

Create a Personal Brand Blog.

Now that we know what type of blog we’re going to be creating, let’s dive right in and get started.

Follow these 5 simple steps to discover how to start a blog that can replace your 9-to-5:

Each of the steps below goes into all the details you need, to learn how to start a blog. So, make sure that you’re following along.

Remember that the sooner you start, the sooner you’ll start making money.

Step 1. Choose Your Blog’s Niche & Monetization Strategy

What is a niche?

Your blog’s niche is the topic that your content will be about. For example, this blog is in the “How to make money” niche. I narrowed it down to the “How to make money blogging” sub-niche. Although I can write about the different ways to make money online, I focus on teaching readers how to start a blog and make money with it.

When it comes to choosing your niche, the best idea is to go with what you’re already knowledgeable about.

But remember that passion does not equal profits. If monetizing what you’re passionate about is not easy, you need to pick a profitable niche.

You can also combine your passion with one or more profitable niches. For example, if you love cooking, you can start a blog about healthy living, combined with personal finance and/or personal development.

The idea is to keep your underlying message consistent throughout your content. You don’t want to be writing about healthy living and suddenly start posting about exotic cars. That’s a different niche and doesn’t fit the topic of your blog.

Top money-making niches
Here is a list of profitable niches that will help you get started. Any niche/topic can make you money when monetized correctly. But these niches will help you make money faster.

  • Make Money Online
  • Finance
  • Travel or Outdoor
  • Parenting
  • Fitness
  • Self Help Or Personal Development
  • Beauty and Fashion
  • Relationships
  • Lifestyle
  • Real Estate

When thinking about your blog’s niche/topic, don’t waste time trying to come up with the perfect idea. And don’t try to reinvent the wheel.

Remember that “there is nothing new under the sun”. Everything has already been said and done. You just need to say it differently. So, go with what you already know, or pick a profitable niche and become an expert on it as you go.

And when it comes to competition, don’t worry about it. In the end, it all becomes a numbers game. Whoever has the most higher quality content, higher quality backlinks…etc, will get the most traffic. And you only need some of the traffic to make life-changing money.

Choose Your Monetization Strategy

Understating how you’re going to make money from your blog, even before you launch it, is key to creating a successful blog.

By having a monetization strategy in advance, you’ll know exactly how to structure your content to be helpful to your readers and generate income at the same time.

With that in mind, here are the 2 best ways to monetize a blog.

Pro Tip: “The SECRET to making money online is to TEACH.”

Top 2 Monetization Methods

  1. Affiliate Marketing: Selling other peoples’ products/services for a commission. You create content that teaches your readers how to do something and recommend products/services that they’ll need to achieve the desired results. When somebody buys one of those products/services, you’ll earn a commission, usually 50% or more off the price.
  2. Selling Your Own Products/Services: You can create a course or an eBook and sell it to your audience. This strategy can very lucrative and can also be used alongside affiliate marketing.

Once you start researching your competitors, you’ll notice that most of them use the two strategies above to generate income from their blogs.

Other Monetization Strategies to Consider

  • Consulting: To make money from consulting, you’ll need to spend time networking and becoming a leader in your particular niche.
  • Memberships: You can have a members-only section on your blog where you offer exclusive content to those who subscribe.
  • Sponsored Content: This is when a company or person pays you to add their content to your blog. You’ll need a decent amount of monthly traffic before this becomes a good option.
  • Traditional Ad Networks: This is when you place ads from networks such as Google Adsense on your blog. You can implement this strategy early on but know that you won’t make a lot of money from it. Again, you’ll need a decent amount of traffic to make a substantial income.

Spend some time now brainstorming ideas for your niche. Think about what you’re already good at and what your interests are. See if you can combine your interests with a profitable niche and choose a monetization strategy that fits.

Once you have your niche and your monetization strategy, you can move on to the next step.

Step 1: Quick Recap

  1. Pick Your Niche
Your niche needs to be something that you’re genuinely interested in. Think about what you’re passionate about, your skills, and your knowledge. Is there market demand? Can you easily find products and services to promote? Can you easily create educational content that people are searching for?
  2. Choose Your Monetization Strategy
Once you have your niche, decide how you’re going to monetize your content. Do some competitor research to see how they are monetizing. Before moving on to the next step, you should know exactly what products and services you’re going to be promoting.

Pro Tip: “Promote what you use.”

Step 2. Register Your Domain Name and Get Hosting

Now that you have your niche and monetization strategy down, it’s time to get your domain name and website hosting.

Domain Name
For your domain name, you want to pick something short, easy to write, and easy to remember.

Since we’re creating a personal brand blog, you can use your first name combined with another word.

For example YourFirstNameOnline.com or YourFirstNameDigital.com.

You can even use your first and last name as your domain or combine them to create a short, memorable domain name.

Website Hosting
This is the service that hosts all your website files and makes your site accessible on the internet.

I recommend Bluehost to host your blog. Bluehost offers reliable and affordable web hosting plans, perfect for beginners.

Installing a Theme and Basic WordPress Settings

When it comes to your blog’s design, you want to make it look nice but simple.

Avoid clutter and having too much going on. Make it easy for your readers to navigate and read your content.

Recommendations for a better blog design

  • Don’t put ads on your blog in the beginning. You should wait until you have a good amount of visitors first.
  • Leave a lot of white space. Have good spacing between sentences and paragraphs for easy reading.
  • Use images to add interest to your posts. Images can help draw readers into your content. They can also provide visual cues to help them remember what they’ve read.
  • Make sure your logo looks good and professional. You can get a decent logo for $5 using Fiverr.
  • Always use black for your text color and white for your background. Remember that people are coming to your blog to read, make it as easy as possible to do so.
  • Be consistent. Your blog’s design should match your overall theme and style. This means that if you use a bright color scheme, then your entire site should reflect this.

With that in mind, I recommend choosing the Hello Elementor theme and Elementor plugin as your page builder. Both are 100% free, and fast and you can upgrade for more features later.

Permalinks (URLs)

In your WordPress dashboard, head over to “Settings” and navigate to Settings > Permalinks and make sure that “Post Name” is chosen.

Create the Main Pages for Your Blog

These two pages are must-haves for any blog and should be in the header menu of your blog.

About page: This is the page where you introduce yourself to your readers. Talk about who you are, your blog’s purpose, etc…

Contact page: This is the page where you give your readers a way to reach you. You can utilize a contact form, add your email, or even a physical address and phone number.

The following three pages, are also very important and should be on the footer menu of your blog.

Disclaimer page: This page discloses how you intend to and/or generate income from your blog. This page is required by law and basically every affiliate program.

Privacy Policy: This is the page that tells the readers how you’re using the information you collect from them. Even if you don’t collect any information from your readers, you should still add this page to your blog.

Terms of Service: If you’re selling a service or products on your blog, you need to have this page. But again, even if you’re not, you should still add this page to your blog.

Install some Essential WordPress Plugins

Plugins are tools that add extra features and functionalities to your WordPress blog.

When starting a blog on WordPress you want to make sure that you install plugins that will help you with SEO (search engine optimization) and site speed.

Recommended essential plugins

  1. ElementorPro: This is a WordPress website builder. It lets you create any type of website and it’s the plugin I used to create this entire site.
  2. WP Rocket: This plugin increases website speed by caching static pages, reducing file sizes, and much more. Site speed is a major ranking factor so this plugin is a must-have.
  3. ShortPixel Image Optimizer: This plugin compresses all of your images, helping pages load much faster. Again, fast websites rank higher on search engines, so this plugin is a good option.
  4. Rank Math: This is a powerful SEO plugin that will help you optimize your entire website. With this plugin, you’ll have no problems making sure your posts and pages are fully SEO optimized.
  5. Antispam Bee: This is a powerful plugin that helps prevent comment and trackback spam. And best of all, it’s completely free.

Step 3: Quick Recap

  1. Install WordPress
Login into your Bluehost account to install WordPress
  2. Install the Elementor plugin and Hello Elementor Theme
With this theme and plugin, you’ll be able to design your blog fast and easily. Go to Fiverr to get a nice logo for your blog.
  3. Create Main Pages and Install Basic Plugins
Create the main pages for your blog and install the basic plugins.

Remember that your blog does not need to look perfect when you’re first starting out. Your blog design can easily be updated later on.

Your main priority should be writing and publishing high-quality content.

Step 4. Write and Publish Your First Post

Congratulations!

You’ve chosen a niche, and a monetization strategy and have successfully launched your new blog.

Now it’s time to start writing great content that your visitors will love.

You might feel inclined to start putting out 300-500 word blog posts quickly, but that’s not going to work. The days of being successful with short-form content are long gone.

Search engines, Google specifically, want long-form content that’s information-rich and gives people the answer to what they’re searching for.

With that in mind, your first post needs to be a Pillar Post.

What are Pillar Posts?

Pillar posts are long-form, 2000-plus words, well-written articles that dive deep into a particular topic. These posts contain useful, actionable information and answer all the questions a reader might have, to help them make an informed decision. Think of these posts as ‘information so valuable, you could sell it.

How to Create a Pillar Post

Here are two great post formats that you can use to create your pillar posts. Make sure to enhance your posts with images and videos.

  1. How To Guides (Ultimate Guides): With these types of articles you’re teaching your readers how to do something. For example, Ultimate Guide To Losing 10 Pounds in 15 Days. Break it down step-by-step and explain everything in detail.
  2. List Posts: For example, Best Weight Loss Products or Top 21 Products To Lose Weight Fast. Again, explain why you’re recommending the product, have pros and cons, etc…

Since you have already chosen a monetization strategy, you’ll be able to easily monetize your content.

For example, if you’re doing affiliate marketing, you’ll be able to become an affiliate for the products/services that you’re recommending in your guide.

If you’ve created your own eBook or course, you can structure your post in a way that pre-sells your eBook/course and have a call-to-action at the end.

Other types of posts to write

  • Product Reviews: Reviewing a particular product or service that you have tried and tested.
  • Product Comparisons: Comparing two or more similar products. Talk about the cons, pros, similarities, and differences.

Don’t sacrifice quality for the sake of monetization. Remember that you want to write high-quality content always. Make sure you write content that your visitors will find useful, even if you can’t monetize it.

Your Initial Content Strategy

As I mentioned above, your first post needs to be a pillar post.

So, here is your initial content strategy:

  1. Create Your First Pillar Post – This will be your first piece of monetizable content. Ideally, this should be a guide where you’re teaching your readers how to do something. You’ll monetize by recommending the products and tools they will need.

For example, take a look at this guide that you’re reading right now. This is a pillar post where I’m teaching “how to start a blog”. You can easily see all the services and tools I’m recommending and monetizing this pillar post with.

  2. Create 5-10 Supporting Blog Posts – Let your pillar post tell you what to write about. Your pillar post will give you unlimited content ideas.

For example, look at this pillar post you’re reading right now. It’s a guide on how to start a blog and make money with affiliate marketing.

You can easily see that I can write a post on “the best affiliate programs”, and “the best affiliate networks”. I can then go on and do a full review of each affiliate program and each affiliate network.

I can also do a full review of all the products and services that I’m recommending. I have unlimited content ideas just from this pillar post.

Initial Keyword Research: Finding Topic Ideas for Your Pillar Post

For the type of blog that we’re creating, having the perfect keyword doesn’t really matter.

The goal is to become niche/topic relevant.

You achieve that goal by writing about everything that people are searching for.

If you create all the content people are searching for, your blog will rank and you will get traffic.

So, focus on becoming niche/topic relevant and building your domain authority first. The rest will fall into place later on.

With that said, the fastest way to get topic ideas is by doing some competitor research. Search on Google to see what others in your niche have written about to get ideas for your own post.

Make your posts 10x better by making your post longer, giving more details, answering more questions, and using better images and videos.

You can find more topic ideas by taking advantage of keyword research tools. You can use free tools such as Google Keyword Planner, Keywordtool.io, or Twinword Ideas.

You can do more advanced keyword research by using a more powerful tool such as Semrush or Ahrefs.

Structuring Your Blog: The Silo

Understanding how to structure your content is an important part of building a successful blog. For this, we use the Silo Structure.

What is the Silo Structure?

This is a content structuring method that helps search engines understand the topic of your content and how each article on your site relates to each other. It also simplifies internal linking (an important aspect of On-Page SEO) and helps pass Link Juice to lower-ranking pages.

What is Link Juice?

When you start building backlinks, you’ll be sending the most powerful/authoritative links to your homepage and money pages (ultimate guides) to help them rank. Some of the power from those backlinks will flow through to the pages that your homepage and money pages are linking to, helping them rank. This is known as Link Juice.

This is the Silo Structure that you’ll be using on your blog. This is the same structure I’m using on this site.

Homepage

Your homepage is your most important page. You’ll send most of your backlinks to the homepage.

The homepage links to the Silo Hub pages.

Silo Hub page

the silo hub page is a dedicated page for all your money pages related to a particular topic.

For example, if you’re in the travel niche, one of your silo hub pages could be Hotels. And all your ultimate guides (money pages) about Hotels will reside in that silo hub.

The Silo Hub page links to the Money Pages.

Money Page (ultimate guides/Pillar Posts)

These are your ultimate guides, tutorials, etc… This is the content that generates money.

As you can see from the silo structure above, the Money Page only links back to the silo hub. This is the most important content, so we let keep all the link juice.

The Money Pages only link back to the Silo Hub page.

Supporting Content

This is the supporting content that you create for your Money Page. Each Money page must have its own supporting content.

The supporting content pages link to the Money Page and to each other.

Outreach Articles

This is the content that you create to get a guest post backlink from a niche-relevant website.

Treat these articles the same as your Pillar Posts (money pages).

Each money page should have at least one outreach article.

The outreach article links to the Money Page and to one of the supporting content. The supporting content links back to the outreach article. The Money Page links back to the outreach article as well.

Product Reviews

You can create a stand-alone review of the products that you talk about in your pillar posts (ultimate guides).

The Silo Hub page links to the Product Reviews. And the Products Reviews link to the Money Page.

Publishing Your First Pillar Post

You’re ready to start writing once you have the topic for your pillar post.

To start writing your first post go to Posts > Add New on your WordPress Dashboard.

Add New Post

You’ll be taken to the “Add New Post” section where you can start writing your first pillar post.

Add New Post Wordpress

Before you publish your pillar post, make sure you’ve followed the on-page SEO best practices:

  • Put the keyword in your blog’s permanent URL.
  • Include the keyword in the title of your post.
  • Add your keyword to the first or second paragraph.
  • Include the keyword inside of your headings (H1,H2, etc..).
  • Add the keyword throughout your pillar post
  • Add one or two links to an authority page (not a direct
competitor), like a .edu or .org site
  • Nofollow your affiliate links
  • Dofollow all other outbound links
  • Add exact/partial match alt tags to all images
  • Don’t use an alt tag for the Featured Image
  • Name the actual image file with exact match/partial match
    filename
  • Only use each alt tag/filename one time per post

Internal Linking

This is one of the most important aspects of On-page SEO. Without proper internal links, your Off-page SEO efforts will suffer.

If you follow the Silo Structure discussed above, you should have no problems with your internal links.

Follow these rules when inter-linking your content:

  • Use mostly partial or exact match anchor texts
  • Mix in navigational anchor text when appropriate
  • Put your most important internal link at the top of the content
  • Make sure all your internal links are Dofollow

Have the Rank Math SEO plugin installed to help you fully optimize your posts.

Tips to Help You Write Better Posts.

  • Use the Hemingway App to help you write clear and concise sentences.
  • Write short paragraphs of no more than 3 sentences.
  • Use bullet points, images, and videos.
  • Format your headings with the correct H2 and H3 tags.
  • Always use a black font and white background for easy reading.
  • Proofread for typos and grammatical errors.

Follow the same principles to write all your supporting blog posts.

Complete this step to the best of your abilities. Write one incredible Pillar Post and 5-10 amazing supporting blog posts and you’ll be on your way to having a successful and profitable blog.

You should aim to have at least one completed silo before moving on to the next step.

Step 4: Quick Recap

  1. Write Your First Pillar Post
This is your main monetizable content. This should be a how-to guide. It can also be a List Post depending on your niche.
  2. Create the Supporting Content
You should create 5-10 pieces of supporting content for your Pillar Post.
  3. Use the Silo Structure
Structure and interlink your content using the Silo Structure.
  4. Follow SEO Best Practices
Make sure that your content is fully SEO optimized. Use the RankMath plugin to help you with this.

Your Goal is to have at least one completed Silo as discussed above. If you can create more than one content Silo the better.

Step 5. Promote Your Blog

Once you’ve properly structured your blog and your content, promoting your blog becomes priority number one.

At this point, you’ll be following the 80/20 rule. Spend 80% of your time promoting your blog and 20% of your time writing blog posts.

Organic traffic from search engines is what you want. Although there are many ways to promote your blog, 99% of your efforts should be on SEO.

To get organic traffic from search engines you need Backlinks from high Domain Authority websites.

What are Backlinks?

Backlinks are votes of confidence from other websites to your website. This lets search engines know that your site can be trusted as a source of information. You get a backlink when another website links to your content.

The most powerful backlinks you can get are from niche-relevant sites (websites in your niche), especially if those sites have authority in your niche.

The goal is the get as many votes of confidence from authoritative websites as you can, especially from niche-relevant sites.

Types of Backlinks

Not all links are the same and all links will not have the same effect on your blog. Understand the different types of links so you can formulate your backlink strategy.

  • Social Signals: These are links from social media sites. Sharing your content on social media and encouraging others to share will give more social signals.
  • Pillow/Diversity Links: These links are important because they add diversity to your overall backlink profile.

These links are from sites such as:

    • Q&A sites
    • Slideshow sites
    • Audio/video sites
    • Web 2.0 (medium.com, blogger.com, etc…)
  • Contextual Links: These links come from within the content of a related article on another website. These are the links that really help you rank.

    Types of contextual links:

    • Niche Edits: These are links added to the content of an existing article or page. These links are powerful because the existing article or page may already have backlinks and traffic. This will pass link juice to your link and you may also get some traffic.
    • Guest Posts:  These are articles you write and post on other niche-relevant websites with a link back to your site.

Nofollow & Dofollow Backlinks

There are two types of backlinks that you can get; Nofollow and Dofollow backlinks.

  • Nofollow: These links do not pass any authority to your site. Although they are important for your overall backlink profile.
  • Dofollow: These are the links that pass authority or link juice to your website. These are the backlinks that you want to get.

Understanding Anchor Text

The anchor text is the clickable text of a link. There are different types of anchor text and they are important when building backlinks.

You should aim to have a balanced mix of all the anchor text types in your backlink profile.

Types of Anchor Text:

  • Branded: When a brand name is used as the anchor text.
For example, The text “Wilber Alfonseca” is linking to a page on wilberalfonseca.com
  • Naked: When a URL is used as the anchor text.
For example, The text “wilberalfonseca.com” is linking to a page on wilberalfonseca.com
  • Misc/Navigational: When a generic word or phrase is used as the anchor text.
For example, The text “Click here” is linking to a page.
  • Partial Match: When a variation of the target keyword is used as the anchor text.
For example, The text “a list of best WordPress plugins” is linking to a
    page about essential WordPress plugins.
  • Exact Match: When the target keyword is used as the anchor text.
For example, The text “essential WordPress plugins” is linking to a page about essential WordPress plugins.

Top Strategies to Promote Your Blog and Generate Backlinks

Guest Blogging

Identify authoritative blogs in your niche and pitch guest post ideas to their editors. Create high-quality guest posts that provide value to their readers and include a link back to your blog.

You can also create posts and publish them on sites like Medium. This will give you more social signals.

How to land guest blogging opportunities?

Focus on building relationships and offering value first.

When you find a blog that you would like to get a backlink from, start engaging and building a relationship first. You can start leaving valuable comments on their posts, sharing their content, link to or mentioning their blog in one of your posts.

You can also offer them a free guest post on your own blog. Think of what you can do for them, before asking for anything in return.

Building relationships and offering value, leads to guest blogging opportunities.

Broken Link Building

Find blogs in your niche, and go through their posts and pages to find broken external links. You can use a tool like Ahrefs to make this easier. Once you find a broken link, email them and let them know that they have a broken link, and give them a link to your content as an alternative. Since you have crafted high-quality, highly linkable pillar posts, you’ll most likely get a backlink.

Commenting on Other Blogs

Find other blogs in your niche and comment on their content. Make sure you leave constructive comments that add value. Most blog owners reply back and you can start engaging with them and building relationships with other bloggers, which could lead to future guest posts and other collaborations.

Leverage Social Media Platforms

Create your account on the major social networks, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Pinterest, Instagram, and TikTok. Start posting your content and building your personal brand.

  • Facebook: Videos and curated content
  • Twitter: Blog posts, news articles, and GIFs
  • Instagram: High-res photos, quotes, and Stories
  • YouTube: Video content (2nd largest search engine)
  • Pinterest: Infographics, step-by-step photo guides
  • TikTok: Short video content

Create and Grow an Email List

Getting new visitors to your blog is great. But once they leave, they might never come back. Getting new visitors to subscribe to your blog’s email list/newsletter is the best way to keep them coming back.

You should start growing your blog’s email list from day one. You can use an email marketing tool such as GetResponse to create signup forms and manage your subscribers.

Benefits of  Having an Email List

  1. Targeted and Engaged Audience: Your subscribers have willingly opted in to receive your emails. So, they are more likely to respond positively to your updates and promotions.
  2. Increased Website Traffic: Your email list is a direct source of traffic. Simply, send your subscribers an update about a new blog post and watch the visitors start rolling in and commenting and engaging with your new post.
  3. Direct Communication Channel: Unlike any other source of traffic, you can reach your subscribers directly.
  4. Relationship Building: You can build trust, credibility, and loyalty by consistently delivering valuable content to your subscribers.
  5. Ownership and Control: Unlike any other source of traffic, nobody can take your email list away from you.

Keep spending most of your time promoting your blog and the traffic should start coming in.

As long as you keep promoting and publishing high-quality, useful content, you’ll have no problem getting traffic and ultimately, making some money.
